August Ensign 2009 article titled "Steps to the Temple"
Picture of a Temple
Blank pieces of paper
Marker/things to color
Idea
Tell the story in the article about visiting how she would visit her grandma and seeing the stairs that led up to the Manti temple.
Show the picture of the Temple and talk about how there are "steps" we can take to get to the temple.
Write down the first step in the article on a blank piece of paper and talk about it while your child colors around it.
Continue with the other steps.
When all the papers are completed, take them to some stairs
Put the Picture of the temple at the top of the stairs
Lay down each step in order on the stairs leading up to the Temple
Have your child step on each paper as she/he repeats what it says to make it to the temple at the top of the stairs.
Emily really liked this activity. I gaged it by the fact that she wanted to keep walking up the stairs to the Temple. Later she told her Aunt Ally on the phone all about family night in great detail. I also thought it was cute that on the repentance paper she colored a picture of her saying sorry to her friends.
Here's a super easy idea that we use a lot. I have 2 plastic sandwich bags; one has papers with the names of Primary songs and the other has papers with easy activities (take a walk, play ball, play duck duck goose, etc.). I also have a binder with the pictures from the Gospel Art Kit. The kids take turns picking a song paper, picking a picture from the binder and picking an activity paper. We sing the song, read the story on the back of the picture and talk about it, do the activity and then have dessert. GREAT for those weeks when you don't have time to plan something.
