Isolation Gratification: Day 13

I'm grateful for these quiet moments in the afternoon when each of my kids independently go and do their own school work, play, practice and projects and the whole house is calm!

E: (making muffins for her farewell with her friend Alix. She started scooping sour cream into a measuring cup). I hate sour cream scooping sour cream so bad. Alix: me too (looked at Emily at started gagging) E: (giving herself a motivating talk). Jesus died for my sins so i can scoop sour cream. Alix: Jesus died for my sins so I don't have to scoop sour cream. You'll make a great dad someday (August 2022) M: (I had to set up a stay in your bed reward system after 2 little boys pretty much slept on my floor for an entire summer) S: (Didn't really struggle to stay in his bed but wanted to do the same things as Aaron every night so he earned his reward really quickly. A week after he had is reward). Mom can I stay in my bed for a week and earn another reward? M: No because you don't have a hard time staying in your room anymore. S: Yes I do I wake up every night scared and want to come down to your room but then I tell myself to toughen up ( Aug. 2022) M: (in california driving Ally's 3 youngest and Spencer driving to a science camp that Hazel attended the year before) Hazel: I think you guys will be making slime. Clara: My mom really hates slime. S: Momma you hate slim to don't you. M: Yeah it can ruin things like carpet really easy. Hazel: Yeah well my mom hates it so much that anytime we bring some home from school or someplace she immediately throws it in the garbage. S: Wow your mom must.... (insert dramatic pause) M: (when I heard the pause I thought he was going to say.... be really mean) S: REALLY HATE SLIME (Aug 2022) S: hey mom do you know what would happen with our bodies if we never drank any water. M: well there was a student at school who doesn't talk and while I was reading the book 5 little monkey's swinging on the tree he started doing the actions and then at the end said snap, snap, snap. S: Wow he really never says anything. M: nope that's why I work with him. So what was the best part of your day. S: (he sat up and gave me a big hug and said ). Giving you a hug. M: that's cool (thinking its the signs they teach them to help remember the words) B: (during the primary program songs Spencer in all of his glory was following along with the chorister, Bart leans over). What is he doing? M: Leading the music. Spencer's just being Spencer (afterwards the couple in charge of the sacrament music came up and said Spencer is so adorable leading the music. Who taught him how because he was right on beat) (Nov 2021) S: (singing I am a Child of God and got to the part that says 'and so my needs are great). (Sept 2021) A: (feeling sad and anxious in sacrament meeting about his pending talk in primary). Mom could you have another baby so I can cuddle it. M: Sorry I'm too old to have more babies. A: Well then can't you adopt one? M: No our family is complete but you can always cuddle all the new cousins. A: (big sigh). OK but I just wish one was ours(Aug 2021) S: (after the tooth fairy came and doubled his reward for letting Bart pull out both lower teeth). Man if the next time the tooth fairy comes and I only get coins I'm for sure not letting dad pull anymore teeth. Just not worth it for that (Aug 2021) G Dick: (after hearing G Becky read a facebook post from the farm Bureau about fasting/prayer for the drought). Well I'm going to start praying for wind because the more I pray for rain all I get it wind. Maybe if I pray for wind the rain will come. M: I love them they are the best

S: Well I really wanted to give you the pink flowers but dad said they are poisonous.

M: (Aaron wears the same couple of hoodies every day to school. Often Emily points it out to Aaron warning him not to be the kid who is always wearing the same hoodie. As Aaron came out for church one day wearing the same white shirt he's worn for the past 3 months I comment). Aaron why don't you wear another one of your church shirts. You have more in your closet?

E: Yeah Aaron do you want to be that kid always wearing the same thing?

A: I already am THAT kid(February 2021)

S: (trying to solve that there is only 3 airheads and 4 kids problem). I have an idea. Aaron you can give Emily a little bit of your arrow head and Jane you can give Emily a little bit of your arrow head. That's a good solution.

M: What about you can you share some of your airhead?

S: (Bart and I arrived home from a date). Mom your home. How was your wedding?

M: (opened it and saw an empty roll of tape).

M: (coughing after choking on some water in the car)

J: Oh mom you've got to stop coughing or people will think you have covid.

M: It's not like you can just make yourself not cough.

J: (coming down the stair the night after Zoey arrived and she saw that Zoey hadn't moved. She walked by me shaking her head). Mom what will the kids think?

S: (looking at his plate of unappetizing dinner). Mom you know how after I poop some of it is in my underwear and then my bum starts to itch.

M: Yeah

S: Well eating makes you poop so I'm not going to each anymore and then I won't poop and have an itchy bum.

M: I think dad could drive it but it cost too much money.

E: (Our Elf was discovered on the floor with Aaron as the culprit being the one who drug her around and left her in the middle of the floor. Emily was very distraught upon finding this Elf knowing that because she was touched she probably wouldn't be able to make it back to the North Pole). I just don't know what we are going to do about the Elf. It's not going to be able to go back to the North Pole again because it's in the middle of the floor and it will keep getting touched. (thinking) What can we do? I hate this but I think the only thing that can be done is to get rid of Aaron so the Elf won't be touched and can move again(Dec 2013)

J: (Emily found an old small stocking with her name on it so she put it next to her other one on the mantel. Jane noticed it a day or so later and said) Mom we have 2 Emily stockings and we need to take this one off. If people come over and see it they will think our family has 2 Emily's and that one of them is in college. (Dec 2013)

E: You know mom fast Sunday is just the same. It doesn't go any faster.
M: I know fast also means to go without food.

Allyson: (After seeing Jane's extreme stubbornness) I think Jane has a full vocabulary in her head but she knows you want her to talk so she is so stubborn she just isn't going to talk. (June 2010)

M: We should go buy Daddy a father's day tomorrow. I wonder what we should buy him? Do you have any ideas?

E: Yeah, we should go to all the stores in the world to find something like Market Square, Cosco, fresh market, market square. (June 2010)

E: We could never ever drive to Ally's house, that would be exhausting (May 2010)

E: (After a truck carrying a playhouse on a trailer passed us at a stop light) Mom I don't like our car anymore.

M: How come I think our car is fine

E: No we need something else. Hey how about we get a truck?

E: Yes we do and we could get one with a trailer and then we would be able to carry a playhouse to our house.(May 2010)

E: (I've been trying to enforce the "bathrooms are a place for privacy" policy. This is what Emily said after Jane followed him into the bathroom). Mommy Jane isn't letting dad have his private in peace in the bathroom (May 2010)

E: (After I told her she needed to clean her room before I would turn on the TV) OK but could you do me a really big favor and pick up all the books in my room (April 2010)

E: Miss Sharon says mommies have to listen to everything there daughters tell them to do. (April 2010)

Raquel: (After looking at the vegetarian comment below) Emily, Are you a vegetarian?

E: No I'm a Sunbeam (February 2010)

E: (talking to the TV while watching Olympic speed skating with her dad) Come on you can do it, keep going, you can do it (February 2010)

E: What time is Jane going to grow up?

M: Jane and you are always growing and getting bigger

E: (After she finished crying over smashing her finger in the cupboard) I smashed my finger to smitherings. (January 2010)

E: (In the most excited voice like she's found a partner in crime at the grocery store) Mom, Mom did you see, that little boy sucks his fingers just like me. (January 2010)

E: Mom come in my room

M: Emily I want to stay here and be with daddy

E: But mom I need to be tended in MY room(January 2010)

J: Nigh-Nigh (as I left her room after laying her down for her nap)(December 2009)

E: Mom why didn't you say hi to that man in the street.

M: Your right I guess I should have said hi. (I've been trying to get her to be more friendly to people at church and didn't want to sound like a hypocrite.)

E: I guess you must be shy

M: Sometimes I am

E: That's OK I'm shy too(August 2009)

E: But where will I sleep (referring to Grandpa Dick's tease that he was going to sleep in her bed).

D: Emily you can sleep in our room on the floor or in our bed with us.

E: OK (pause) but they can't sleep over we don't have enough cereal for them in the morning. (July 2009)

M: Emily, pretend means they are in your head and you imagine them.

E: Mom last night dad called me a silly girl but I'm not a silly girl, I'm a smart girl. (June 2009)

E: Mom get that toot toot away from Jane. (referring to a plastic Hawaiian lay that Emily likes to put around her waist and pretend it is a tutu.)

M: Emily, Jane likes to play with it.

E: But mom I need my toot toot.

M: Why do you need it Emily

E: So I can toot! (June 2009)
